CALCULATING THE COST OF LONGARM QUILTING
The price of longarm quilting is directly relative to the size of your quilt top and is definitively calculated by these measurements as they relate specifically to total square feet (TSF) of your quilt. Whilst most quilting designs will be fully inclusive of the TSF costs, some chosen quilting designs may bring additional costs due to their complexity and associated additional hours required to fulfill your personalised requests.
There are additional charges for quilt preparation, batting supply, backing fabric supply & binding attachment should any of these services be required by you. These services and associated costs are detailed below.
The final cost is calculated during the consultation phase, and you will be fully informed of the total costs prior to any work being undertaken on your behalf.
An example to follow to estimate the quilting cost:
Measure your quilt top.
Measure the length and width of your quilt top in inches, then multiply the length x width, then divide this figure 144 to give you the quilt top area in Total Square Feet (TSF).
In the example above, length = 90”, and width = 60”. 60 X 90 = 5,400 square inches.
5,400 ÷ 144 = 37.5 Total Square Feet (TSF)
ESTIMATE QUILTING COSTS
Here at South Coast Quilting we primarily offer Edge to Edge (E2E) quilting.
Whilst custom quilting is available, customers should note there is a relative lengthy delay for custom quilting given the demand for these services. What Is Edge-to-Edge Quilting?
Also knows as all-over quilting designs, edge-to-edge is a quilting style that involves repeating one quilting pattern over the entire quilt top — usually in vertical or horizontal rows. You choose the quilting pattern, and that pattern will be repeated over the entire quilt top.
Prices are therefore calculated based on the size of your quilt top total square feet (TSF), with a minimum charge $80.00 irrespective of the TSF.
Edge to edge design price is $5.00 per square foot, whereas custom quilting is calculated at $12.50 per square foot, both are inclusive of thread. Should you require a significantly higher density quilting of your chosen edge-to-edge design, the price may increase slightly.
This would be discussed and clarified during the consultation phase.
Estimate of the quilting cost of the above example:
37.5 TSF X $5.00 per square foot = 37.5 X 5 = $187.50
Additional Associated Costs if required:
- Piecing of backing supplied backing fabric (single seam) $30
- Attachment of supplied binding (front attachment only) $1.50 per foot
- Quilt top preparation $50
- Uni-Directional Backing Fabric with Vertical Seam $50
- Postage (with tracking via Australia Post) $18.95 - $31.55
- Supply of Batting $22 to $31 per metre*
- Supply of wide- back backing fabric $40 per metre
- Trimming Service $40**
* Prices of the supply on batting will vary with the type of batting chosen.

** Should you require your quilt to be trimmed after completion, it will be trimmed 1 inch from the outside border unless otherwise specified, including of squaring the corners. Trimmed fabric and remnants will be returned with the quilt to you.
Custom quilting
Custom quilting is the process of creating a unique quilt design that reflects the individuality and preferences of you as the quilter. It involves careful planning, precise and skilful quilting to bring your design to life.
The differing elements of custom quilting are often designed or redesigned to fit a specific space in the quilt. Custom quilting is more time consuming to both plan and to stitch out than edge to edge quilting.
When it comes to custom quilting, the possibilities are truly limitless. These personalized elements can tell a story or evoke cherished memories, making your quilt even more special.
